Medis and LaGray Form Strategic Partnership to Improve Access to Medicines in Africa

With an objective to improve competitiveness and build capacity to provide access to quality affordable drugs in Africa, two African pharmaceutical companies, LaGray Chemical Company of Nsawam, Ghana and Medis Laboratories of Nabeul, Tunisia reached agreement on Tuesday to collaborate on a number of fronts. In the agreement, signed in Tunis on Tuesday 15th September 2009, the two companies agreed to combine resources in research, mutual transfer of technology and product distribution.  This is the first such strategic partnership between a North African and West African pharmaceutical company

“Finding sustainable solutions to healthcare issues in Africa has been our objective since the inception of LaGray. This agreement is a big step in that direction as it brings the dynamism and product range of Medis to bear on this effort”, noted Dr. Paul Lartey, Chief Executive Officer of LaGray.  In his turn, Dr. Lassaad Boujbel, General Manager of Medis drew attention to the synergy that this South-South collaboration brings to the growth of the pharmaceutical industry in Africa.  “We at Medis have acquired a lot of experience over these past few years in our quest to be among the best pharmaceutical companies in Africa.  We do have a lot to share with our new partner”, commented Dr. Boujbel.

Medis Laboratories, founded in 1995, is a leading pharmaceutical company in North Africa.  The company manufactures a wide range of generic pharmaceuticals and specializes in sterile dosage forms including small volume injectables, ophthalmological products as well as oral dosage forms.  The company adheres strictly to the highest quality in manufacturing and is in the process of acquiring European GMP certification.

LaGray Chemical Company was established in 2001 as the first manufacturer of active pharmaceutical ingredients in West Africa.  LaGray is now a fully vertically integrated company with technology for the manufacture of both active ingredients and finished dosage forms including dermatologicals, capsules and tablets.  The company is the recipient of the Frost & Sullivan 2009 Ghanaian Pharmaceutical Market Industry Innovation and Advancement Award.
